Transportation

  • Train: The easiest way is by train.
    • JR Yamatoji Line: From JR Osaka Station, the “Yamatoji Rapid Service” gets you to JR Nara Station in about 50 minutes. It’s covered by the Japan Rail Pass and costs around ¥840 one way.
    • Kintetsu Nara Line: Another option is the Kintetsu Nara Line, which offers a slightly different route.

  • Go early: Arrive early in the morning to avoid the largest crowds, which tend to arrive around 10 or 11 a.m. and leave around 3 p.m. 
  • See key sights: Nara Park, with its friendly wild deer, is the main draw. Key temples and shrines include Todai-ji Temple (housing a giant bronze Buddha) and Kasuga Taisha Shrine (famous for its lanterns). 
  • Be prepared: Nara Park is a large, mostly outdoor area. Be prepared to walk and wear comfortable shoes. You may want to bring a hand sanitizer or wet wipes, as there are many deer around.
