Overview & Terminal / Gate Layout

Haneda Airport has three terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2) are primarily for domestic flights, while Terminal 3 (T3) is exclusively for international flights. The terminals are connected by an underground walkway and a free inter-terminal shuttle bus for landside access. Terminal 1 and the domestic areas of Terminal 2 are open from 5:00 am to 12:00 am, while Terminal 3 has a separate layout focused on international travel.

  • Terminal 1 (T1): A six-story structure that is a domestic-only terminal.
  • Terminal 2 (T2): A six-story structure, which is mostly domestic but also handles a few international flights.
  • Terminal 3 (T3): A five-story structure dedicated entirely to international flights

Public Transportation & Ground Connections

Haneda Airport’s public transportation options include the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail, which connect directly to the airport terminals. For ground connections, passengers can also use express and route buses for various destinations or a free shuttle bus that runs between the airport’s domestic terminals and the international terminal.

Trains and monorail

  • Keikyu Line: Connects Haneda to various points in Tokyo and beyond.
  • Tokyo Monorail: Runs from Haneda Airport to Hamamatsucho Station, where you can transfer to the JR Yamanote Line to reach Tokyo Station and other central areas.

Buses

  • Free shuttle bus: A free shuttle bus runs frequently between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and the International Passenger Terminal (Terminal 3).
  • Express and route buses: Keikyu Bus and Tokyu Bus operate airport shuttle services to many areas in Tokyo and Kanagawa. Tickets can be purchased at automatic ticket machines or bus counters.

Other options

  • Parking: There are parking lots available, and reservations can be made in advance.
  • Underground passageway: An underground passage connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
  • Transit ramp bus: A bus operates on the transit ramp between terminals.

Between terminals

  • To travel between terminals, you can use the free shuttle bus, the Keikyu Line, the Tokyo Monorail, or the underground passageway between Terminals 1 and 2.

🕓 Between Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) Airport Connection

The minimum connection time between Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) is 3 hours. However, this is a tight connection time that assumes a single ticket and a seamless transfer. Travel time between the airports is about 75 to 90 minutes via direct bus or train, plus additional time for potential delays, customs, and security procedures, especially when moving between different airlines or handling luggage.

Transfer TypeMinimum Connection TimeNotes
Airline-coordinated transfer180 minutes (3 hours)This applies to a single ticket with the same airline or partner, which accounts for ground transit and check-in.
Independent transfer5+ hours recommendedThis allows for more flexibility, as you will need to collect your baggage, clear immigration and customs, travel to the other airport, and re-check in for your next flight.

Key details

  • Travel time between airports:
    • Bus: 65-85 minutes (direct, recommended for convenience)
    • Train: 75-90 minutes (may involve transfers)
  • Factors affecting time:
    • Luggage: You must collect and re-check baggage if the flights are booked separately, adding significant time.
    • Immigration and customs: These are mandatory for all international travelers arriving at either airport.
    • Traffic: Bus schedules can be affected by road traffic.
    • Security: You will have to go through a new security screening at the departure airport.

Recommendations

  • Book with a single airline: If possible, book both flights with the same airline or through a codeshare agreement to benefit from the lower minimum connection time.
  • Allow for extra time: If you are transferring between different airlines, aim for at least 5 hours to allow for the additional steps of baggage claim, immigration, customs, and ground transportation.
  • Check bus/train schedules: Plan your ground transportation in advance and consider pre-booking bus tickets for convenience.
  • Be aware of airport terminals: Make sure you know which terminals your flights depart from, as they can be far apart
